Could you please pass me the olive oil?
I am cooking a beautiful Tuscan dinner for my family tonight.  I will be keeping with the Tuscan tradition of keeping things very simple and delicious.  I definitely would not be able to prepare an authentic meal without Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
Welcome back to the Martha Petworks monthly post.  This month, I want to speak to you about a new and exciting new food that we are bringing in to The Pet Works.  It really couldn’t be a better time.  We have seen large companies recall dog and cat food at an alarming rate.  YUCK!  This does nothing to help our customers’ confidence in the foods they are buying and feeding to their pets.  We absolutely understand this.  At The Pet Works, it is our mission to find small, independent companies that manufacture and sell American Made foods.
Let me introduce you to our newest pet food:  Tuscan Natural.  ”Old World Nutrition for New World Needs”.  This food is made and sourced in the USA, except for the Extra Virgin Olive Oil, it comes from Spain.  They have several lines of food to meet all of the needs of your dog or cat.
  • Harvest Turkey and Chicken
  • Carne Grain-Free
  • Simply Pure Chicken
  • Simply Pure Lamb

There is, in a 30# bag of Simply Pure, Harvest, or Carne, a full 14 oz. bottle of Extra Virgin Olive Oil, which is equivalent to 2 tablespoons per cup of food.  Why is this a good thing?

Well, let me explain the benefits of using this oil in dog and cat foods.

  • Omega 3 & 6
  • Healthier skin and coat
  • Anti-Oxidant rich
  • Natural Pro-Biotic
  • Promotes digestive health
  • Monounsaturated fat, encouraging the break down of fat
  • Slows carbohydrate absorption
  • Improves blood-vessel function
  • Increases protein absorption
  • Natural anti-inflammatory
  • Helps in the prevention of cancer, obesity, and inflammation

Tuscan Natural has kept things as simple and delicious, just like I would when I prepare a wonderful meal for my family.  It’s what we all want to do, even for our four-legged loved ones.  I am sure that you will find this to be a wonderful food to keep your dog or cat happy and healthy.  The Pet Works guarantees it!  As with everything we sell, we stand behind it 100%.  Plus, Tuscan Natural is available in our area, only at The Pet Works!

bird-cage
Welcome Back!
April brings us wonderful sunny days and blooming flowers.  How could you not be in a good mood?  Even the birds are noisy and happy.
The Pet Works loves birds.  We have products and ideas for all types of pet birds.  Whether you keep dainty little canaries, or have a feisty and fun parrot, we have some exciting new things that can make life easier.  One new item that we carry is a line of cleaning brushes that really help.  These new brushes are designed to work perfectly on bird cages.  They have bottle type brushes that fit together like fingers to get in between cage bars.  One of the brushes also has a perfectly sized wire brush head.  This works really well on the perches.
It is important to work to keep your feathered friends cages clean.  When build-up of waste collects, you are inviting all kinds of germs to breed and live around your bird.  Most birds that end up with mites, do so because they live in an unsanitary environment.  The Pet Works recommends that you thoroughly clean your birds’ cage once a week.  We also recommend that you try to do touch ups once a day.  This is relatively simple.  If you remove any obvious waste, and discard any uneaten foods, you can help keep mites at bay.
Cleaning only addresses one aspect of your bird’s health.  There are many more that are quite vital to long term health and welfare of any caged pet.  This month we are focusing on the activity level and enrichment of your pet bird.  The Pet Works has all kinds of bird toys, little brush-like pacifiers, to great big block toys.  Changing out and rotating your bird’s toys is a necessity.  It also allows you to look the toys over and clean them, as well as check for any unsafe pieces.  Some birds become very attached to their toys.  In this case, I recommend that you at least make sure that it is safe, before putting it back in.  Cockatiels can be a little funny when it comes to new things in their cage.  When introducing a new toy, try this.  Put the new toy outside the cage within eyesight of your bird.  This gives him a few days to make sure that it isn’t a threat.  Slowly move the toy closer each day.  You can even hang it on the outside of the cage, too.  Hopefully, your bird will start to get curious about it and you can move it in his home.  Whatever the case, changing and rotating your bird’s toys keeps him active and challenged.  The Pet Works has 100′s of new bird toys to choose from.  Plus, they are all “Buy One, Get One Half Off”.  This is to encourage you to rotate and change your bird’s toys a little more often.
Pet birds can be a challenge, but I feel that the reward is much greater.  Take a moment to really look at a cage full of beautiful baby parakeets.  Look close, where can you see such an amazing variety of brilliant colors?  It is truly astonishing!  Be quiet and listen, where else can you hear such a sweet and lovely song than that of a young male Canary?  Birds add such a rich texture to our lives.  For those of you that understand the joy of owning birds, I recommend watching the DVD, “The Parrots of Telegraph Hill”.  It is an amazing story of a flock of birds and their caretaker in San Francisco.  If you have young children at home (or even if you don’t), watch the movie “Paulie”.  It is truly heart warming.
Thank you to all of our fellow bird lovers this month.  April has gone to the BIRDS!
Until next time,
Martha Petworks

Loving a Dirty Dog

jeanas-dirty-dog1

Martha Petworks loves a Dirty Dog!

Not really, but I love my dirty dogs…just not as much as when they are clean. March seems to be the month that keeping the house clean with three dogs is a CHORE. The grass outside is wet, the space along the fence line is muddy, and my three dogs just love to greet people or dogs passing by.

I have some great items that I use in our house that helps to keep the peace. One thing that we just brought in is a door mat called “Dirty Dog”.  It’s a wonderful shaggy mat that catches all of the riff raff that the dogs bring in on their feet. Plus it’s very absorbent, so it dries off the water they track in, too.

Our antique chairs in the living room are placed in front of the window. So naturally the dogs jump up there to look out the window. What a mess! I use an unscented stain and odor remover on these. When they get too grubby I take off the slip covers and put them in the wash with an oxygenated odor remover that really helps.

One thing that really helps with this time of year is keeping my shaggy dog trimmed. Our dog groomer at The Pet Works has done a great job. If you are looking for a great groomer for your dog or cat I believe that working with Shante is a treat.

This month at The Pet Works we are putting all of our stain and odor removing products on sale. They are 30% off. Each one of us at the store has used one type or another, to deal with our critters in or own specific ways. If you need help figuring out which product will work best for you, we can offer helpful advice. If you are working with problems on carpet, upholstery, or hard wood floors, we can help! We also have some great smelling products to use around small animals as well. These products work safely and naturally to eliminate odor, not just cover it up.

Be sure to make a stop at our birds. We have a wonderful variety of baby parakeets. They are SO cute with their beautiful big eyes and feathers of every color. Just taking a second to look at them will truly bring a smile to your face.

So, good luck with the “dirty dogs” this wet spring. We are here to help!

Until next time,

Martha Petworks

Happy Valentine’s Day

gsd-heartAhhhh….love.  We love all kinds of things.  We love our families, our friends, and our neighbors.  We love football, dinner, and great movies.  For those of us that love our pets, there is no greater joy. When guests come to visit at our house, it may seem a little chaotic.  Dogs barking, jumping, and quite literally, freaking out.  Who would want to live in a house like that!  We do.  Behind closed doors, each dog is there for us in a uniquely different way.  They know exactly where we are in the house at all times.  Following us from room to room.  I think that they love the evenings the best.  Their family is home, nestled in on the sofa, fireplace warming the room, and blankets spread across their laps.  It is decidedly peaceful.  I wouldn’t want it any other way.  Open that treat drawer in the kitchen and GAME ON! The three of them could be lying in the living room snoring in front of the fire, and BAM! they are awake and racing each other to the kitchen.  We bring just about every treat that we sell, home for the “boys” to try.

At the store, we are careful about the selection of treats that we carry.  There is a good reason for that.  Day after day there seems to be new treats that have been recalled for any number of reasons.  Many of the top grocery store brands we specifically try not to carry.  These seem to be the most often recalled.  We have a set of standards that we live by when we select our treats.  Number one our list is that they are made in the U.S.A.  It is even better if the product is also sourced here.  We also try very hard at locating and promoting treats that are from the Pacific Northwest.

Cost is another contributing factor.  Will our customers find the value in the treats?  We have three dogs at home.  We go through our fair share of treats.  A $20 package of treats that only lasts two or three days won’t be a great value for us or our customers.

Of course our dogs need to love them.  So do our customers.  Each item that we bring into the store has to be 100% guaranteed.  There should never be a question of us not standing behind everything that we sell. This goes for our treats, our foods, and our products.

There is also a great number of people that need grain-free or wheat-free cat and dog treats.  We strive to find treats for even the most touchy stomachs and dietary needs.  There are a lot of treats out there that readily address all of these issues.  Many treats are now beneficial.  They have glucosamine, mint, charcoal, even some that have special ingredients to help calm very nervous pets.

This Valentines’ Day we have selected several treats in our dog and cat sections that our team members really “LOVE”.

Rhonda has selected the “Organix” dog treats.  She feeds these to her Sir Didimus because the are made locally in Clackamas, Oregon.  ”Organix” treats are made without chemical pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, or growth hormones.  Sir Didimus LOVES them!

Matt chose the Canidae Snap Biscuit because his dog Dexter LOVES them.  They are a U.S.A. product made with quality ingredients.  He finds them easy to break down for any size dog.  They are naturally preserved and holistic.

Sarah chose for her favorite cat treats, the chicken flavored Feline Greenies.  They are the only treat that all four of her kitties LOVE.  No matter where they are in the house, the minute they hear the bag open, they come running!  Plus, she loves them because they are made in the U.S.A.

Eric chose the Plato Thinkers pepperoni sticks, anything less tasty and Rocky will pee on it!!!  Dirty animal.

Martha Petworks chose the Bubba Rose biscuits.  What can I say, I’m a sucker for adorable packaging. These American made biscuits come in gift-ready boxes complete with the bow!  They are bite-size biscuits that come in three different flavors.  Who wants a box of cheap chocolates for Valentines’ Day!  Give your favorite pet lover a gift to share with their pet.

We have set up some terrific products to display in the store for the month of February.  Each of these products is LOVED by The Pet Works.  We are very sure that you will LOVE them too, we GUARANTEE it!

Until next time,
Happy Valentines’ Day!

Happy New Year!

HappyNewYearStarting off a new year is always a little daunting, especially in the current economic climate.  We have “fiscal cliffs”, recession, higher gas prices, higher food costs, and scary utility bills.  It always seems to be something to keep us from looking on the bright side.
However, Martha Petworks is ready to embrace the new challenges, offer helpful advice, and find deep joy in having pets as part of her family.  The Pet Works is starting off this year with an overall Mission Statement.  We want to share it with you. Read more »

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

PetworksChristmas

Welcome back from Martha Petworks.

Each year at Christmas I try my hand at making gifts for family and friends. I love the idea of something heartfelt, and I love the creativity of it all. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to find cute little hand-crafted gift boutiques in town? Well, this year at The Pet Works, we have taken the idea and made gift boutique sections in our stores.

There are so many wonderful gifts for the pets it’s a little overwhelming. For me, seeing plastic stockings with rawhide chews and cheesy nylon collars all made in China, really doesn’t feel very merry.
So, we have narrowed the selections down to wonderful handmade cat toys, beautiful sweaters made with Fair-Trade Labor, now, that says CHRISTMAS! We have incorporated stunning boxes filled with holiday dog biscuits, and fun and funky cat collars, all made in the USA! Read more »

Happy Thanksgiving

dogholiday
Welcome back from Martha Petworks! This next week really seems to be the week that we kick off the Holiday Season. We invite the guests, prepare the menu, clean the house, put out the decorations….whew! The list goes on and on.

One thing that I start with each season, is a fresh new groom on my dogs. I start with the dogs so that when I vacuum the couch, wash the blankets and slipcovers, they can stay clean. I would absolutely hate it if anyone who came over instantly smelled…DOG!
I am so EXCITED to announce our new grooming department at The Pet Works in Longview. After several years of not being able to offer this service, we now can. We really wanted to offer grooming, but we wanted to make absolutely certain that we found just the right person. I believe that we have. Read more »

This month I want to touch on a very specific problem that we help with almost every day.  All of you “fluffy” kitties out there cover your ears.  We are talking about our “Fat Cat Contest”  It is meant to be fun, but it also addresses a larger problem.  Obesity in our fun feline friends.
On November 3rd at both of locations in Longview and Astoria, we will be having a weigh-in.  Each cat that comes in will receive a FREE 5lb. bag of Science Diet Light cat food just for coming in to be weighed.  We will weigh each cat and record the weight. How to Create Your Own Poison Dart Frog Eco-System

287px-Blue.poison.dart.frog.arp
We were so very fortunate to have been gifted a collection of Poison Dart Frogs from a long-time customer of ours.  We received three breeding sets of three different varieties of frogs.  HOW AMAZING!  Nick quickly set-up a beautiful terrarium for us to house them in our Longview store.  He had already built the first one at the Astoria location.  It is truly a sight to see.  He has the whole system set up to electronically monitor the humidity levels, and installed an automatic fogging unit to keep the humidity at the perfect percent for our new little jewels. Annual Fall Aquarium Sale

AnnualFallAquariumSale2012
Welcome Back!
This month we are kicking off our Annual Fall Aquarium Sale.
I know, I know, another sale…really?
Well, this isn’t your average, everyday, mark stuff down and hope it sells, sale.  We are putting together an entire selection of beginner through advanced hobbyist aquarium set-ups.  This year it is our goal to put the right products and helpful experience in your hands to be successful in the aquarium hobby.
With the Aquarium Nitrogen Cycle, the perfect water chemistry and fish selection a bit overwhelming, some people will start, then give up.  This is exactly what we want to help with.  We don’t want to just simply sell a box with an aquarium in it, send you on your way and be done with it.  We hope to educate and nurture a new hobbyist!!!  What could be better then that?
